My friend worked in Australia for a short time, and she brought home some Australian wine. Does anyone know…

March 17th, 2010

Posted by admin in australian white wines | 8 Comments »

…the name of a white wine that is very dry and full bodied that is made in Australia that has a slightly higher than average alcohol content? It was a great wine, and I have lost contact with my friend. I love to have some for the holidays.
Thanks, but it was not Yellowtail. My fear is that it may have been only locally distributed. I have not found it on the net, but I am still trying! I am in the USA.

Hello Eagle Woman! You will find that any chablis or chardonnay or "classic dry white" from the Western Australia Margaret River region is a spectacular wine. Those guys in Western Australia are so self conscious about being so far away from the rest of the population of Australia that they do not distribute any mediocre wine east of the state’s borders. They would therefore be very unlikely to send any crap wine to the USA.

The first bottle you see with "WA Margaret River" plastered on it… grab it and I can pretty much guarantee that it will be a good one… having followed this fail safe method for around 10 years now I’ve never opened a crook one.

Love Gazza…. woops… I mean.. Mango Man.

Tim Minchin – White Wine In The Sun (Christmas Song)

March 16th, 2010

‘White Wine In The Sun’, also known as ‘Christmas Song’. I put this up since a lot of people were looking for it.

LYRICS:

I’m looking forward to Christmas
It’s sentimental I know, but I just really like it
I’m, I’m hardly religious
I’d rather break bread with Dawkins than Desmond Tutu to be honest
And yes I have all of the usual objections to consumerism
The commercialisation of an ancient religion
And the western-isation of a dead Palestinian
Press-ganged into selling PlayStations and beer
But I still really like it.

I, I really like Christmas
Though I’m not expecting a visit from Jesus
I’ll be seeing my dad
My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum
They’ll be drinking white wine in the sun
I’ll be seeing my dad
My sisters and brother, my gran and my mum
We’ll be drinking white wine in the sun.

I don’t go for ancient wisdom
I don’t believe just ’cause ideas are tenacious it means that they’re worthy
I get freaked out by churches
Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords
But the lyrics are dodgy
And yes I have all of the usual objections to the mis-education of children forced into a cult institution
And taughted to externalise blame
And to feel ashamed
And to judge things as plain right and wrong
But I quite like the songs.

I’m not expecting big presents
The old combination of socks, jocks and chocolate is just fine by me.

‘Cause I’ll be seeing my dad
My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum
They’ll be drinking white wine in the sun
I’ll be seeing my dad
My sisters and brothers, my gran and my mum
They’ll be drinking white wine in the sun.

And you my baby girl
My jetlagged infant daughter
You’ll be handed round the room
Like a puppy at a primary school
And you’re too young to know
But you will learn yourself one day
That wherever you are and whatever you face
These are the people who’ll make you feel safe in this world
My sweet blue-eyed girl

And if my baby girl
When you’re twenty-one or thirty-one
And Christmas comes around
And you find yourself nine thousand miles from home
You’ll know whatever comes
Your brother and sister, and me and your mum
Will be waiting for you in the sun
Girl, when Christmas comes
Your brothers and sisters, your aunts and your uncles
Your grandparents, cousins, and me and your mum
Will be drinking white wine in the sun
We’ll be waiting for you in the sun
Baby, whenever you come
We’ll be drinking white wine in the sun
Waiting.

I, I really like Christmas
It’s sentimental I know.

How much for the cheapest wine in Australian Dollars (AUD) in a supermarket or local shop in Australia?

March 14th, 2010

Posted by admin in australian white wines | 1 Comment »

In which town do you live? Is it red or white or both? Is it local or foreign wine?
Thanks!

To give you an idea, I live in Brussels in Belgium and the cheapest wine I can find here is a box of 3 liters of red or white Spanish wine for 6 Euro = 10-11 Australian Dollar.

I get clean-skins….reds and whites…for 3.99 a bottle at my local Liquorland. There is also a first choice liquor that does clean skins for between 3.99….9.99 They have a Chilean Cab Merlot for $5.99 which is one if the smoothest wines i have ever tasted..

I live in Newcastle NSW.

The Reds at 3.99 are a lovely South Australian Shiraz Cabernet…and a Victoriam Cabernet Merlot. Both are fine….perhaps not top shelf, but far superior to a lot of the labeled wines at three and four times the price. They come from James Busby Cellars on Tooronga Vic…and they just don’t handle bad wine.

Always go for the clean-skins of you want good value for money.

Wine Australia – White Wine

March 12th, 2010

Posted by admin in australian white wines | No Comments »

Don’t assume that if you’ve tasted Australian Chardonnay, that you have experienced the extraordinary diversity and quality of all that Australian white wine has to offer.

Australia’s white wines have a story to tell thats all their own, and it won’t surprise you to learn that the winemakers who create them have a unique approach that sets their wines apart from the rest of the world.

When you look at it in the glass, a white Australian wine can be anything from opulent golden yellow orange almost to palest lemon yellow. The colour depends on the region it comes from (how cool or warm it is) and on the grape from which it was made; for example, Riesling’s are paler than Chardonnay’s, and so on.

Colour can be a clue to the taste (the deeper it is, the richer the flavour) but a better indication comes from taking a big sniff. Swirl the glass round and sniff again. One thing you’ll be sure of from Australia is that you will be smelling the product of well grown and fully ripened grapes.

Delicious, concentrated ripe fruit, harvested in perfect conditions is easier to obtain in Australia than almost anywhere else in the world. Beyond this it is difficult to generalise, so different are the aromas, flavours and taste sensations that come from each of the grapes, blends and regions.

is there a white wine on the australian market that leaves the taste of grapes in the mouth when swallowed?

March 11th, 2010

There is only one grape variety that makes wine that gives the taste reminiscent of grapes and that is Muscat.

While it is sometimes made as a dry wine, most Muscat wines are sweet. You will often find it sold by glass in restaurants as a dessert wine so you could try a glass. But Muscat wines don’t tend to be very expensive if you want a bottle

Can anyone recommend a good type of white wine that is French or Australian and not to dry or bitter?

March 11th, 2010

Posted by admin in australian white wines | 4 Comments »

I live oversea’s in Thailand and have a hard time finding nice California Chardonnays, so I have been buying white French wine that sucks, any help on brand or types would be great!

Rosemount Chardonnay, excellent Aussie Wine, if you can get it, pay a little more for the turning leaf chardonnay, so mellow
Look for Rosemount, Penfolds, Hardys, Peter Lehmann, Oxford Landing or Jacobs Creek

Any of the above chilled with food or on their own will go down a treat
